Organizing a memorable house party requires careful preparation and planning. From choosing the right venue to managing the guest list and creating a delightful atmosphere, there are various aspects to consider. In this article, we will explore how my mentors and my team of financial advisors throw the most amazing parties without overspending.
There are top 4 things to consider when organizing a house party. First, you need to secure a venue as well as the décor for the party scene. Next, you have to consider what food to serve. Then, invitations should be sent so you can fill the guest list. Once confirmed, the organizer can inform the attendees if they have to prepare for any games and fun performances in the party.
Importance of Preparation
Preparing for a house party is not just about the fun and excitement of the event; it also involves careful consideration of various factors to ensure that the gathering is as fun as you hope it will be. Whether it's a casual get-together or a themed celebration, proper planning sets the stage for a successful and stress-free experience. Careful planning also ensures that organizers and guests do not go out of budget while preparing for the party.
Financial advisors possess valuable skills in budgeting and resource allocation, which are equally applicable to organizing events. Their expertise in managing finances can significantly contribute to the seamless execution of a house party, ensuring that the event is both enjoyable and cost-effective. Lucky for me, I have seen firsthand how my mentors apply their money management training to organizing a house party.
And believe me when I tell you that the best parties in the Philippines that I attended were all organized by financial advisors.
1. Venue and Decor
The choice of venue and the overall decor significantly impact the ambiance of a house party. Selecting the right setting and creating an inviting atmosphere are key elements in hosting a successful event. Financial advisors excel in budgeting and allocating funds for venue and decor, making their insights invaluable for those seeking to host memorable gatherings without going over budget.
Airbnbs are the generic choice for these parties. You can book a full house with a pool or a penthouse in a hotel for this. If you plan to divide the cost among the attendees, you can select the venue according to the number of guests you plan to invite.
Tips for Cost-Effective Decor
Creating a stylish and inviting ambiance for a house party doesn't have to break the bank. By incorporating creative and cost-effective decor ideas, hosts can elevate the atmosphere of their event while staying within budget constraints. From DIY decorations to strategic lighting, there are various ways to achieve an impressive look without incurring excessive costs.
When we had our Christmas party, we just bought tinsel curtains to add a shiny accent to the room. We also got themed balloons as prop for our pictures. If you select a good aesthetic venue, very minimal design is needed inside.

2. Guests
The guest list and the management of invitations and RSVPs are crucial aspects of planning a house party. Hosts should take care of invitations to ensure there will be guests at the party. These can be done through text messages, calls, or social media messages. It is also up to the hosts to be as creative as they want to be. Our organizers created invite posters as well as party countdowns leading to the event day.
Send reminders to guests as they may be busy and lose track of the days ahead of the party.
3. Food
Food is a central element of any successful house party. Financial advisors' budgeting skills can be applied to catering and food preparation, enabling hosts to create a diverse and enjoyable menu without overspending. By incorporating tips for cost-effective meal planning and preparation, hosts can ensure that their guests are treated to a delightful culinary experience.
House parties are typically more casual than formal events. This way, organizers can decide if it will be a potluck dining, contribution-based, or catered. If it’s a potluck set-up, guests should be informed beforehand that they must bring food the size of which is good for sharing. A theme for the food can also be mentioned.
Examples of potluck categories are: Filipino food, Korean food, food that starts with the first letter of your name, food that comes in a specific color, food from an assigned country or culture, and more.
Another type of food set-up can be contribution-based. This way, the organizers can select food to prepare and then divide the cost among the guests. This is also favorable for guests who are busy during the day who does not have time to prepare for food-to-share.
The last option is the catered service. When the host wants to take care of the food, they sometimes foot the bill for the entirety of the food during the party. This is common among house parties for birthdays or weddings.
4. Party Games and Talent Showcase
Entertainment plays a significant role in the success of a house party. Financial advisors can provide valuable guidance on organizing engaging activities within budget constraints, ensuring that the event is both fun and memorable. By offering ideas for interactive games and talent showcases, hosts can create an enjoyable and dynamic atmosphere for their guests.
What are examples of Filipino party games?
Classic Filipino party or fiesta games include: Bring Me, Hep-hep Hooray, Relay Game. A newly popular intuition game popularized by It’s Showtime called “Tumpakners” is also going rounds among parties of all ages.
If it’s a house party for work, you can also tell guests beforehand that the program will include dance or song presentations for pre-selected groups. The presentations are rarely perfect nor polished, but they are fun and shows the bond among the people involved.
How much does it cost to throw a house party?
Discussing budget considerations for organizing a house party is essential. By providing a breakdown of potential expenses and offering tips for cost-saving, hosts can approach event planning with a clear understanding of financial implications.
Budget should be carefully planned because social events does not only happen once a year. Christmas parties typically happen for many friends groups and family sides, so we do not want people to overspend for their house parties.
Consider this as a sample for a house party of 30-40 pax.
Loft-type Suite starts Php 15,000/night
Food and utensils for 30-40 pax (We did potluck last time but safe to say we did Php 200/person for our group contribution) Php 8,000
Drinks (alcohol, water, soft drinks included) – Optional (Can set a budget for Php 4,000 half of food budget)
Prize for Games (our company provides Sodexo rewards so we used that) Php 2,000 in Sodexo rewards.
Organizers can prepare around Php 29,000 for a house party with 30 to 40 attendees.
How much do you spend as a guest for a house party?
If you are a guest and you are wondering how much you have to spend for a house party. By default, these are the items you might spend on:
Outfit (Check if there is a dress code, if you already own an outfit that fits the dress code, you do not have to buy a new one. It’s fine.) For me, my outfit budget should not exceed 2-3% my monthly income for parties like these.
Potluck or food budget. Ask organizers if it’s a traditional potluck or contribution-based.
Optional gifts for your fellow attendees.
